. . Read original at Listin Sports.

Baseball America said the club is making a particularly strong push to sign Venezuelan shortstop Humberto Arteaga in a deal that could approach $1 million. The magazine's web site lists Arteaga at No. 11 in its list of the top 33 international prospects.

The Royals are also pursuing Venezuelan outfielder Vicente Lupo, who is also drawing strong interest from the Mets. Baseball America puts Lupo at No. 25 on its list. ESPN.com's Keith Law links the Royals to Venezuelan outfielder Jeffrey Baez.

COLORADO FIRMA OTRO VENEZOLANO

The Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with Venezuelan shortstop Ronny Mejias for a bonus of around $300,000, according to international sources.

Mejias, a 16-year-old switch-hitter from Zulia, was one of the better hitters on the market with an advanced swing, though he probably won't stay at shortstop. Earlier in the week, the Diamondbacks also signed speedy 16-year-old center fielder Yorman Garcia out of Venezuela.

SEATTLE FIRMA 6 LATINOS

Mariners sign six international players
The Mariners sent out a press release today about the six international signings they made. It's as follows:

SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle Mariners Vice President of International Operations Bob Engle today announced the signings of six international free agents. All of the following players were signed to 2010 contracts.

Signing their first pro contract with the Mariners organization were:

From Colombia: Right-Handed Pitcher Jose Torres
From the Dominican Republic: Outfielder Phillips Castillo, Right-Handed Pitcher Rigoberto Garcia
From Venezuela: Left-Handed Pitcher Luis Pina, Third Baseman Jose Calderon, Left-Handed Pitcher Erick Gomez

Calderon, 16 (2/15/94), is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitting third baseman from Venezuela. "We felt he was one of the more accomplished young hitters available in the international market," VP of International Operations Bob Engle said. "He has a great makeup and is sound fundamentally at the plate. Calderon drives the ball hard as well as showing some long ball ability. In the field he is stead with sure hands and true arm." Calderon will receive an invitation to the 2010 Instructional League in Arizona.

Castillo, 16 (2/2/94), is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting outfielder from the Dominican Republican. "We have been following Castillo for two years and believe he was the best position player available among the July 2nd candidates," Engle said. "He is exceptionally strong for his age and another player with a great makeup. The ball explodes off his bat and had good running speed. He has an above average arm and solid in the field. We are extremely pleased to bring him into our organization." He will receive an invitation to the 2009 Instructional League in Arizona.

Garcia, 16 (9/23/93), is a 6-foot-5, 202-pound right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republican. Engle describes him as "A tall young man who has strong arm and all the makings to become a true power pitcher. He already shows solid average fastball now with ability to throw well above average down the road. Garcia could be the sleeper of the group. He is very similar to Michael Pineda when he first joined our organization."

Gomez, 17 (1/16/93), is a 6-foot-1, 165-pound left-handed pitcher from Venezuela. "He is a poised young projection pitcher with good pitching mechanics and good feel for pitching," Engle said.

Pina, 16 (12/6/93), is a 6-foot-2, 178-pound left-handed pitcher from Venezuela. Engle says "He is accomplished, poised and already has good feel for pitching. He will have to make some adjustments in his delivery as many young pitchers do, but physically has ability to be solid in all areas." Pina will receive an invitation to the 2010 Instructional League in Arizona.

Torres, 16 (born 9/1/93), is a 6-foot-4, 165-pound right-handed pitcher from the Colombia. Engle describes him as "a tall, thin young man with very good delivery and very projectable body build. He is a hard worker, very intense and has a good aptitude. Torres has chance to throw harder down the road and displays advanced breaking ball for his age." Torres will receive an invitation to the 2010 Instructional League in Arizona.

The Mariners will continue to sign international players throughout the year.

Philadelphia se Acredita Venezolano Promisorio

In today’s Gelb-Brookover collaboration, they note the Phillies have signed Venezuelan SS Anderson Gonzalez for $300K, the amount that seems to have become the Phillies comfort amount over the last few years in Latin America. For reference (and this is off the top of my head), a $300K bonus for a player drafted in June would be 3rd round money. Here is what G-B have to say

The Phillies lost a talented prospect when they surrendered single-A Lakewood shortstop Jonathan Villar in the deal with Houston that brought them righthander Roy Oswalt at the trade deadline. They are hoping they signed another talented shortstop prospect in Anderson Gonzalez, who recently received a $300,000 bonus. That’s the largest bonus the Phillies have paid to any of their international signings this year. “I love his hands, his athleticism and the way he plays the game,” said Sal Agostinelli, the Phillies’ international scouting supervisor. “He’s built a little bit like [Derek] Jeter. It’s a body that he will fill into. The thing I really love is that he can hit. He doesn’t have a lot of power, but he’s only 16.” Gonzalez is the second Venezuelan shortstop the team has added during the international signing period, which began July 2. They also signed Francisco Silva for $180,000. The Phillies could not sign Gonzalez at the beginning of the international signing period because he was not yet 16 years old. He turned 16 July 25. Agostinelli said Gonzalez will soon join the Phillies’ Venezuelan Summer League team and report to the Florida Instructional League later this year. He will also play in the Venezuelan Parallel League during the winter.

Gonzalez, a 15-year-old from Barquisimeto who trains with Jose Montero, stands out from other shortstops in this year’s July 2 class with his ability to stick in the middle of the diamond. Gonzalez has the potential to be quality defender with excellent hands. An average runner who has been timed at 7.0 seconds in the 60-yard dash, Gonzalez has an average arm, though his arm action isn’t classic for the position. With a slender 6-foot-2 build, he has a projectable frame but doesn’t have much present power. He doesn’t stand out in batting practice and some scouts wonder whether he will hit enough to be an everyday player in the big leagues, but others have been more comfortable with what Gonzalez has shown against live pitching. The Phillies have shown strong interest in Gonzalez, though he won’t be able to sign until he turns 16 in late July.

CUBANO CUBANO CUBANO HACE RUIDO

Leonys Martin has become the latest high-profile player from Cuba to leave his family and country behind to chase a major league career. If recent history is any guide, Martin figures to garner a seven-figure signing bonus once he establishes residency and becomes a free agent.

Martin, whose age is listed as 22, left Cuba after playing for the country's national team in Taiwan during the FISU World University Championships. He batted leadoff frequently for Cuba in that tournament, which is limited to players age 27 and under. He was on the 18U junior-national team in 2006 as well, so his age appears to be quite believable. As a 21-year-old, Martin was a reserve on the 2009 World Baseball Classic team. He's a lefthanded hitter whose best tools are his speed and defense. He's a plus runner at least, being timed in 4.1 seconds to first base from the left side in Taiwan, and showed strong small-ball skills, with the ability to drag bunt for hits and handle the bat on the hit-and-run. He also played center field and showed at least average range. Martin also hit .326 with 10 home runs in the last Serie Nacional, Cuba's top-level league, while playing for Villa Clara, and has drawn plenty of walks in Cuba, posting a .311/.492/.491 line in 2008-2009, when he drew 78 bases on balls and ranked second in the league with 17 steals (in a 90-game season).

Martin was reported to be in Mexico, trying to establish residency to become a free agent. That process can take months, but it's possible Martin could give an organization a 23-year-old speedy center fielder for the 2011 season.

➡ No lo habiamos publicado pero Toronto tiene firmado desde hace 8 meses a un cubano al cual le hicieron un contrato por 4 años por la pipoc 10 MILLONES DE DOLARES.

The Red Sox have Cuban shortstop prospect Jose Iglesias on their 40-man roster. Now, the Blue Jays have a top Cuban shortstop prospect of their own.

According to the Toronto Star, the Blue Jays signed Adeiny Hechavarria to a four-year, $10 million deal Tuesday. The 20-year-old's contract is worth $1.75 million more than the deal Iglesias signed with Boston last July.

The Jays faced competition for Hechavarria's services from the Yankees, Cubs and Angels.

The Cuban shortstop prospect hit .262 with a .302 on-base percentage in his final season in Cuba's National Series and has drawn mixed reviews from scouts. But White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez, a former teammate of Hechavarria on Cuba's national team, thinks the shortstop will succeed in the major leagues.

"He's got all the tools," Ramirez told the Star. "If he dedicates himself, the results will come. He knows what he has to do. He has to be a professional, and he has to train hard. It won't be long before he's playing here in Toronto."

Toronto has taken steps to rebuild its minor league system after the team's 75-87 finish to the 2009 season. The Jays acquired prospects Kyle Drabek, Travis d'Arnaud and Brett Wallace in the four-team blockbuster that sent Roy Halladay to the Phillies, and nearly lured highly touted Cuban pitcher Aroldis Chapman to Toronto before he signed with the Reds.

Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos has been trying to restock the team's system in a hurry.

"We're trying to get to the point that we have strong scouting and player development, a strong pipeline of talent from the minor leagues, and with ownership and the market size, we have the ability to keep our best players here," Anthopoulos told USA Today during spring training. "But we need to build this thing so our players can be here for an extended run."

Hechavarria agreed to the deal with the Jays last month, but the completion of the visa process prevented Toronto from making his signing official.

The Blue Jays weren't the only team to sign a Cuban prospect to a four-year deal on Tuesday.

The Tampa Bay Rays signed Leslie Anderson to a four-year deal worth at least $1.725 million.
